GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
The early Christian theologian Augustine of Hippo once said, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” The idea of exploring that book had been on my heart since I began my undergraduate studies at Kansas State University, inspiring me to seek experiences that would expand my worldview. Before graduation, I had the opportunity to join a faculty-led study abroad program in Ireland through the College of Agriculture. It was the first page turned, and I was eager for more. My next international experience took me to New Zealand for the 2020 World Hereford Conference, further fueling my passion for global agriculture and the connections that travel makes possible.
New Zealand
Eager to attend the World Hereford Conference, I applied to represent the American Hereford Association as part of the USA team in the Young Breeders Competition. When I received the call that I had been selected, I was ecstatic to join three other passionate young breeders for this incredible opportunity. Together, we completed training modules in fencing, agricultural economics, beef communication, animal health, cattle handling, livestock judging, showmanship and oral presentation. The experience was truly one of a kind, providing the chance to learn, compete and build friendships with young breeders from around the world who share a passion for Hereford cattle.
IRELAND
During the faculty-led study abroad program, we visited Dublin, Galway and Killarney to gain a deeper understanding of Ireland’s culture, history and global role in agriculture. The itinerary included tours of dairy, sheep and beef operations, each providing insight into the country’s production practices and the challenges and opportunities facing its producers. A particularly noteworthy component of the trip was our meeting with Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, where we received an overview of Ireland’s approach to marketing agricultural products in both domestic and international markets. This experience offered a valuable perspective on global agricultural systems and the strategies that shape consumer engagement and trade.
